If so, they also received a CID number.<\/p>\n<p>What is a CID number, and why do you need to know it? This guide answers all your questions about CIDs, what they do, and how you can find them.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[et_pb_section global_module=\"112798 \"][\/et_pb_section]<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_1 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h2>What is a Google CID number?<\/h2>\n<p>A CID (Customer Identification) on Google Maps is a unique identification number assigned to a specific\u00a0<a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" title=\"business listing\" href=\"\/blog\/top-100-online-business-directories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\">business listing<\/a>\u00a0on the platform. It&#8217;s comparable to a social insurance or driver&#8217;s license number in that it&#8217;s a unique identifier that belongs only to that particular listing.<\/p>\n<p>While Google Ads and Analytics also have their own version of CIDs that can also interlink with a Google Business Profile, We&#8217;ll primarily be speaking to the one used for identifying a business on Google Maps.<\/p>\n<h3>What a CID is not<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Client identification number.<\/strong>\u00a0This is not the same as the client identification number (also CID). Google uses client ID numbers to link browser activity in Analytics (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.analyticsmania.com\/post\/google-analytics-client-id-vs-user-id\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Analytics mania<\/a>). It\u2019s a different identifier, even though it has the same abbreviation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Business ID.<\/strong>\u00a0This number is also different from the Business ID users get when they sign up for a Google Business Profile. The Business ID is only good for identifying the business profile. If your client is also having problems with integrations or ads, for example, then you\u2019ll need the CID.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Google Business Profile Place ID.<\/strong>\u00a0This number is a unique identifier that locates a place on Google Maps or Google Places.<\/li>\n<li><strong><a href=\"\/blog\/gbp-url\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Business Profile URL<\/a>.<\/strong>\u00a0The CID number is not part of your Google Business Profile URL.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_2 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h2>What does a Google CID number do?<\/h2>\n<p>The CID identifies a unique business entity. In short, it\u2019s a way for Google to identify a business across different products.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Google clusters information about the same business using customer ID numbers.<\/strong>\u00a0For example, in the Business Data API, you\u2019ll find your client\u2019s profiles, reviews, and more connected to their CID.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The CID number allows you to find a specific business.<\/strong>\u00a0On\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/google-maps-seo-tips\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Maps<\/a>, you can locate the business from different views. Since the identifier is stable across views, you\u2019ll be able to find the business with ease.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Link your clients\u2019 Google profiles.<\/strong>\u00a0Since the CID is the same across Google products, you can use it to link your clients\u2019 profiles. With the customer ID number, you can link\u00a0their Business profile\u00a0to Maps. Another example is linking between Maps and the Knowledge Graph in Google Search.<\/p>\n<h3>How to use the customer ID number<\/h3>\n<p>If you know a client\u2019s CID, you can connect all their Google profiles. It\u2019s also useful if you\u2019re using any integrations, such as the Google Maps API.<\/p>\n<p>You can also use the customer ID number to track support tickets to Google. It can also help you see if all your client\u2019s profiles are connected. Using the customer ID number can show if new profiles have been created or if something has been unlinked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_3 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h2>Why you should know your clients\u2019 Google CID numbers<\/h2>\n<p>The customer ID number may not seem like a big deal to you. After all, it\u2019s meant for Google\u2019s use. Why do you need to know what number they\u2019re using to identify your client\u2019s business profile(s)?<\/p>\n<p>There are a few good reasons you should discover the customer ID number for every client.<\/p>\n<h3>To keep track of individual listings<\/h3>\n<p>The first is Google\u2019s history of creating new profiles for business locations. This can end up deleting data associated with the original profile.<\/p>\n<p>When that data disappears, so too does\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/googles-local-pack-rank\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the client\u2019s ranking<\/a>. With the CID, you can tell if the profile links to your client\u2019s existing profiles.<\/p>\n<h3>Identify mergers or changes in ownership<\/h3>\n<p>The CID can also help you identify mergers or changes in ownership. Take, for example, duplicate Google Business Profiles. You want to\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/agency-manual-gmb-optimization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claim and merge them<\/a>, especially if there are reviews on the \u201cduplicate\u201d profile.<\/p>\n<p>With the CID, you can tell if\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/merge-google-business-listings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Google linked the merged profile<\/a>\u00a0to the rest of your client\u2019s profiles. If the CID number is different on their Google Business Profile than their Google Ads account,\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/deleting-google-business-account\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">something has gone wrong<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Find businesses across multiple Google platforms<\/h3>\n<p>What happens when you enter the CID in Google Maps? If the business doesn\u2019t show up or the wrong location appears, then there are some adjustments to make.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the CID connects specific listings across Google Search, Maps, and Finder. With it, you can keep track of these links\u2014and take action if anything becomes unlinked. This has benefits for your client\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"\/blog\/how-to-optimize-google-my-business-for-local-seo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local SEO efforts<\/a>. It creates a more comprehensive view of your client\u2019s presence on the web\u2014and makes them easier to find.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_4 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h2>How to get Google CID numbers for your clients<\/h2>\n<p>Google assigns CIDs automatically, so you don\u2019t have to do anything to receive one. If your client already has a GBP or a Google Ads profile, then they have a CID.<\/p>\n<p>If your client has a Google Business Profile, a location on Google Maps, and a Google Ads account, make sure each of these accounts are linked to one another. Once they&#8217;re all connected, it\u2019ll make it easier for customers (and for you) to find your clients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_5 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h2>How to locate the customer ID number for a client<\/h2>\n<p>There are a few different ways to discover the customer ID number for a client. Some of them are easier than others.<\/p>\n<h3>Finding the CID number with Google Maps<\/h3>\n<p>The first method is for those who don\u2019t mind tinkering around with Google in a web browser. When you\u2019re ready, go to Google Maps.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Search the business name on Maps. Make sure it\u2019s the only search result.<\/li>\n<li>Pinpoint the business. If there are multiple results, you won\u2019t be able to locate the CID in the source code or the URL.<\/li>\n<li>Once you\u2019ve locked on to the business, click on the address bar in your browser. Replace \u201chttps:\/\/\u201d with \u201cview-source:\u201d. This will instruct the browser to display the source code for the page.<\/li>\n<li>Now press CTRL+F. This will bring up the search function. Type \u201cludocid\u201d in to search the source code for the identifier.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If you\u2019ve followed the steps correctly, then you should be able to find the CID. It will be a string of characters that appears between \u201cludocid\\\\u003d\u201d and \u201c#lrd\u201d. This is the same for every CID.<\/p>\n<h3>Get CID numbers for service area businesses<\/h3>\n<p>If your client has a service area business (SAB), the process for getting their CID is a bit different. You can still do it, but the view-source method doesn\u2019t work. Instead, you\u2019ll want to look at the URL.<\/p>\n<p>To find the CID for a SAB:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Pull up the listing on Google Maps. Remember that you don\u2019t want to use search results, since you want to pinpoint the exact business.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll notice two very long strings of characters starting with 0x. There is usually a colon between the two of them.\n<ul>\n<li>The second of these 0x strings is actually the CID. It won\u2019t look like a number right now, though, because it\u2019s in hexadecimal code.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>To reveal the CID number, you\u2019ll need a hexadecimal converter. There are a few free ones, which are easy to use (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.duplichecker.com\/hex-to-text.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hex to Text<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>Place the characters between the second 0x and the next punctuation mark into the converter of your choice.<\/li>\n<li>You should come up with a number, which will be the business\u2019s CID.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"et_pb_module et_pb_text et_pb_text_6 et_pb_text_align_left et_pb_bg_layout_light\">\n<div class=\"et_pb_text_inner\">\n<h2>Get a Google CID using a browser extension<\/h2>\n<p>If you tried the Google Maps methods above and didn\u2019t come up with the number, don\u2019t worry. It can be tricky to get this information out of the source code or the URL.<\/p>\n<p>Luckily, some people have created easier ways to get CID numbers for your clients. With a browser extension, it will take just a few clicks to reveal the CID for any business.<\/p>\n<p>There are at least three extensions for Chrome:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/gatherup-google-review-li\/cledombdgacmpceceadogfpacbhfehlf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GatherUp<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/company-information-in-go\/dhlalbbccdkkonkpeaailagagppobblb?hl=en-GB\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Company Information in Google<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/gmb-crush-gmb-audit-tool\/aakkhbloifflgelkkikmbakldbhllbfj?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GMB Crush<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To use any of these extensions, start by installing them in Chrome. Once you\u2019ve done that, head to Google Maps and locate the business you want to find the ID for. Then, click on the extension in your browser toolbar.<\/p>\n<p>Company Information in Google will display the company name, followed by the Google Maps URL. The CID will appear as part of the URL, following \u201cmaps?cid=\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>GatherUp works similarly. Once you\u2019ve clicked the extension, you\u2019ll be able to copy the Google Maps URL. The URL will show the CID.<\/p>\n<p>GMB Crush is different. Once you have the business up on Maps, click the Audit Tool and pick \u201cview categories &amp; CID.\u201d The CID should display above the name of the business.<\/p>\n<h3>Two other methods to get the CID for a client<\/h3>\n<p>If you don\u2019t have Chrome and the view-source method didn\u2019t work, you can try:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>A CID converter, such as the free one from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pleper.com\/index.php?do=tools&amp;sdo=cid_converter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">PlePer Tools<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>You can also request a CID from the Google Maps API if you\u2019re using it.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3>Test the CID<\/h3>\n<p>If you think you\u2019ve found the client\u2019s CID number, you can test it out. Use the generic Google Maps URL, with \u201cmaps?cid=\u201d appended to the end. Add the CID after the equal sign.
